Bimaterial Composites via Colloidal Rolling Techniques: III, Mechanical Properties
نویسندگان
چکیده
The mechanical properties of layered Ce-TZP/Al2O3 composites with laminate and cellular morphologies have been investigated. The strength and toughness increase as the layer thickness decreases, and the amount of transformation in the Ce-TZP layer increases discontinuously at the laminate/cellular transition. Very high strengths (1.1 GPa) and toughnesses (16 MPa?m1/2) have been obtained in some cases. These results indicate that the progressive refinement of layer microstructure and the disruption of planar connectivity of phases are beneficial to the mechanical performance, because they provide more stress concentrators to trigger stress-assisted transformation for toughening functions. The composites of finer microstructure, with a layer thickness of ≤20 μm, have a homogeneous hardness of 11.5 GPa, which is a considerable improvement over that of Ce-TZP alone.

Bimaterial Composites via Colloidal Rolling Techniques: II, Sintering Behavior and Thermal Stresses
Shrinkage behavior and crack formation during firing have been investigated for Al2O3/Ce-TZP composites that have been fabricated by colloidal rolling and folding. These composites show improved sinterability and sinter isotropically after repeated rolling. Interface instability in rolling creates corrugated interfaces with large layer waviness; therefore, rolling can substantially alleviate th...
متن کاملOn the Study of Mechanical Properties of Aluminum/Nano-Alumina Composites Produced via Powder Injection Molding
Powder Injection Molding (PIM) is a precision manufacturing process used for production of advanced composites. Mixing of polymeric binder with metal powders, molding of feedstock, de-binding of brown parts and sintering of green samples are four main steps of this process. In the present study, the compounds containing multi-component binder system and aluminum/ nano-alumina (0-9 wt.%) powders...
متن کاملCombinatorial effect of rolling and carbonaceous nanoparticles on the evolution of crystallographic texture and structural properties of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene.
Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (PE) is a structural polymer widely used in biomedical implants. The mechanical properties of PE can be improved either by controlled crystalline orientation (texture) or by the addition of reinforcing agents. However, the combinatorial effect has not received much attention. The objective of this study was to characterize the structure and mechanical pr...

In this research, the influence of adding micro- and nano- sized calcium carbonate powders to nylon-66 was investigated. Mechanical properties of micro and nano- composites, including tensile strength, elongation, and Young’s modulus, before and after ageing, were determined and analyzed. For this purpose, micro- and nano-sized CaCO3 particles were used as fillers to prepare micro-composites (c...
